The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. Performs complex (journey-level) motor vehicle maintenance and repair work. Work

involves repairing or replacing worn or broken parts, performing preventive maintenance activities.

and servicing motor vehicle equipment and related gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel engine

powered equipment. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision

with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. 

 

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

 

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

 

  • Performs maintenance, diagnosis, repair, or replacement of defective components on motor
  • vehicles.
  • Performs safety and emissions inspections.
  • Exchanges, rebuilds, and overhauls motors, transmissions, differentials, carburetors, and other
  • motor vehicle components and systems.
  • Distributes motor vehicle supplies.
  • Inventories, parts and equipment.
  • Maintains records on work performed and parts used.
  • May maintain and repair heavy construction equipment.
  • May provide guidance to others.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

 

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance and repair techniques, of safety practices and principles, of departmental policies and record-keeping procedures, and of electrical and computerized systems and emission control systems.
  • Skill in locating and diagnosing defective mechanical problems. 

 

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

 

Must possess a valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

May require a certification from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.

May require a Texas Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector license. 

 

Initial Screening Criteria:

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or GED or completion of an accredited vocational/technical program in automotive repair or a related field.

 

Five (5) years of related work experience in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles. 

 

Additional Information:

 

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

 

All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random drug testing.

 

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position.  The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
