Family Health Services is seeking candidates to fill the role of Family Health Policy Coordinator on the Family Health Strategy team. Successful candidates will display an ability to take initiative, work across operational and programmatic silos, and maintain a working knowledge of various health and social issues impacting Texas women, children and families. 

Efforts will include legislative report coordination; communication with internal and external stakeholders; planning and execution of training and education initiatives; and performing complex consultative services and technical assistance work; among others. 

Under the supervision of the Family Health Strategy team's Policy Director, this position initiates, manages, or supports cross-program collaboration across various medical and social support programs and services administered by Texas Health and Human Services. This position serves as a coordination point of contact between HHS staff, governmental agencies, community organizations, and stakeholders.   

Essential Job Functions

  1. Coordinates the development of the following legislative reports: Texas Women's Health Programs Report; State Efforts to Address Maternal Depression, Mortality and Morbidity in Texas; Maternal Depression Strategic Plan; and the Hyperemesis Gravidarum Strategic Plan.
  2. Provides guidance, direction, and technical assistance to FHS staff on family health issues. Performs policy research, analysis, and evaluation of programs, policy, and operations.
  3. Assists in the coordination and development of provider and staff education/training initiatives, specifically the Women's Health Updates and Planning workgroup.
  4. Supports the development of FHS exceptional items and statutory initiatives.
  5. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of HHSC programs and issues impacting women's health, maternal health, and children's health.
  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative processes.
  • Skill in project management, including monitoring of deadlines and compliance with policies and procedures relevant to the project.
  • Skill in facilitating meetings and ensuring that participants meet their deliverables.
  • Skill in researching and analyzing complex program and policy issues.
  • Skill in synthesizing complicated and technical information and into concise materials appropriate for internal and external audiences.
  • Skill in problem solving and independent decision-making.
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing and at presenting information publicly.
  • Ability to independently prioritize time and manage multiple project deadlines.

Initial Screening Criteria:   

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university with a major in government, political science, public health, communications, social work, or other relevant field of study.
  • At least one year of experience coordinating projects, resources, and programs, preferably in a state agency or state or federal organization.   
  • Experience in researching and analyzing program and policy issues.
  • Experience in writing briefing documents or other work-related materials.
