Registered Dental Assistant (RDAII) position is located at the Austin State Hospital (ASH). ASH is the oldest mental institution in the state of Texas, and the first hospital of its kind built west of the Mississippi River. ASH has been a leader in the field of providing the cutting edge of psychiatric care since 1861. The dental assistant is a key team member responsible for providing direct healthcare that supports providing dental care to all residents of the facility.

The RDA II provides direct patient care services under the direct supervision of a Dentist in order to provide quality dental care in an inpatient setting. Work includes but is not limited to: chairside assisting and all duties associated with direct care Dental assisting, all intra oral and panoramic x-rays, set up and break down of all dental procedures, maintaining infection control standards for the dental clinic procedures, cleaning and sterilizing soiled instruments, autoclave tracking. In charge of all front desk duties including but not limited to making daily appointments, ordering supplies, must have excellent computer skills, able to use Microsoft office, Word documents, spreadsheets, and databases to maintain all dental records and data collection systems maintaining dental treatment records, provides self-care counseling to patients. Assisting dentist during “on unit home visits”. Performs any combination of administrative duties commensurate with competency. Works under limited supervision with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
