The Advanced Practice RN is appointed by the Medical Director subject to the approval of the State Hospital Superintendent. Performs highly complex to advanced (senior level) clinical medical care under the clinical and administrative supervision of the Medical Director and/or another supervising physician. Work involves assessing, planning, and providing comprehensive patient care independently or in collaboration with other health care professionals. Directs medical activities/treatment, monitors trends and activities, and makes recommendations for improvement. Utilizes advanced nursing skills in the treatment and care of patients to include medical assessments. Limited prescriptive authority and the evaluation of the efficacy and progress of a patient's individualized care plan. Provides treatment to HHSC employees injured in course and scope of employment. Works under limited supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
